Is it possible to get rid of warts overnight or in one Day?
Jump to:
You might remember warts as a common condition when you were a child. As many viruses, warts is a very common condition in children particularly in those who are aged 3 years and above. There are occurrences when a child is of age 12 and 16 years (National Institute of Health).
How possible is it to get rid of a wart in one day?
Selecting the best management of warts usually considers duration of recuperation. Normally, note is made that 30% of warts are self-limiting and therefore will disappear within a period of months or 3 years. However, the aesthetic loss that is accompanied with warts forces many people to opt for methods that will eliminate the warts faster. If possible, within a day or night.
It is possible to have a wart removed within a day but not through the use of medications. Medications need to have enough time allotted. With most, effect is seen after 3 months and failure to respond to the medication is common and will therefore be identified after a 3-month use.
To add, medications available are meant for managing the condition and not treating the infection. HPV still remains within the system and cannot be eradicated.
Surgical, laser therapy, phototherapy and excision among others are methods that can be able to help get rid of a wart within a day.
Warts causes, symptoms and types
Warts are typically caused by DNA-containing human papillomavirus (HPV) commonly heard upon mention of cervical cancer. It occurs as a lump on the skin that is of varying sizes. It may be flat or smooth. There are over 70 types of HPV (Reed BR, 1996)[1] but specific ones tend to be associated with certain body areas. Warts normally grown on elbows, fingers, knees, soles and hands.

They can however occur in genitals known as genital warts and this can occur in different sites such as the shaft of the penis, foreskin of the uncircumcised penis, anogenital tract and the introitus in women.
Warts commonly do not have roots to the flesh but they may be pedunculated meaning that there may be a stalk that holds them deep in the flesh or genital mucosa. In the latter case, they may be hard to destroy. The HPV that causes the common warts on the hands are due to HPV2. HPV 1 and 4 could also be implicated.
According to the Center for Disease Control, of the genital warts 90% are due to HPV 6 or 11 but they may be co-associated with other types including 16 and 18. HPV 6 and 11 may also cause nasal, oral and conjunctival warts. Warts have an incubation period of months.
There are different types of warts such as:
- Plantar warts: these occur on the sole of the feet. It is usually painful when there is formation of a callus on the wart which makes it difficult to walk. They however appear flat due to the pressure exerted when walking.
- Flat warts: they are often smooth warts, smaller and flat and appear on the neck, face or hands. They grow in clusters.
- Venereal warts: either flat or raised in the anogenital area of the body. They are sexually transmitted and hence venereal.
The most common wart is that that occurs on the fingers though the plantar are also common.
How to get Rid of a wart in one day -Fast remedies at home
There are nuggets of advice provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Their handout gives that you must to do some things at home to ready a wart for removal. This can help reduce the number of treatment sessions you will need.
To do this, make sure that you clean the wart every day at night for a fortnight. Do this with soap and clean water then add a bit of 17% salicylic gel. Then purchase 40% salicylic acid and cover the wart with it. It is in the form of a plaster such as Mediplast.
Leave this pad for a day but observe for any allergic responses such as redness and swelling. Once the duration of time has elapsed, then remove the pad and wash with soap and water again then wear another pad. You will have made the wart look fluffy and it will be easily removed by the doctor.
There are other methods that can help you remove a wart within a day. This sections coming up shall discuss some of them in detail
Duct tape for wart removal Overnight
This method was reported in October 2002 to be able to provide an alternative to the freeze method with liquid nitrogen. This method has a specific procedure. The way it is to be done if you opt for this method is as follows:
- To the wart, apply the duct tape directly over it. Do this for 6 days. When the tape peels off before the required duration, then you should apply a fresh piece of tape on the wart.
- After the time elapses, then soften the wart by soaking it in warm water. Do this for about 20 – 30 minutes. Some sources recommend that you do this for even shorter periods of time such as 5 minutes.
- You can use an emery stone to buff the wart down then reapply the tape for another 6 days. Buffing is helpful in that it helps remove the debris of dead tissue from the peak of the wart. After buffing, leave the wart open for the night.
- Apply another tape on the next morning

The duct tape indeed works. In fact, according to a clinical study, this method showed greater promise to treating warts. The results showed that 85% of the patients were treated of their warts when using duct tape. In comparison to the use of liquid nitrogen, only 60% of the patients benefited.
Duct tapes with an over the counter medication, salicylic acid improves the efficacy. Perhaps this is due to the antibiotic action it has and the increase penetrability through the stratum corneum of the skin.
There are areas on your skin that you are not allowed to apply a duct tape such as on the face. The face is normally sensitive and it would therefore cause irritation of the skin and even inflammation.
Apple Cider Vinegar for warts Removal
ACV is of the most common home remedy for warts unfortunately it does not work in a day or overnight.
How to use
Apply ACV to your warts twice a day and cover the affected areas with a fresh bandage after each application. Other people suggest duct tape in addition to the bandage.
The duration it will take is about 14 days (two weeks) but it will depend on the type, size of wart and how stubborn/severe the wart is.
Other Quick Natural Home Remedies
Alternative and complementary medicine never misses out. However, the list below shows those that apply to common warts and not cervical of genital warts. There are a variety of herbals that have shown that they come in handy in the removal of warts such as:
Milkweed – to use this method, just instill a drop of sap from the milkweed onto the wart.
Lemon oil – instill a drop of lemon on the wart. Do this daily.
Garlic – you will need to crash a clove then smear on top of the wart before you go to sleep. Garlic has got allicin a potent antibiotic that may help in the attenuation and amelioration of the condition.
Dandelion sap – apply the sap onto the wart. It is also beneficial for those with plantar warts on the soles.
Ascorbic acid – you can decide to have it squeezed into a container and all you will need is to scoop and apply or simply take the citrus fruit and rub it on the warts.
Best Fast Warts removal creams
The main goal of treatment of warts is to ameliorate the signs and symptoms. Aesthetic concerns are the biggest when it comes to warts mostly about what people are going to say or ask about your newly acquired lump.

There are cases in which medication can lead to improvement of the condition and lead to a wart-free period in some patients. However, this could go either way with some experiencing failure or no response to the medication. Patients who have HIV are more susceptible to HPV may not respond swiftly to the medication.
According to the CDC guidelines, there are a variety of creams that are indicated for use in warts and standard therapy is availed for professionals to use.
Imiquimod cream
this cream is in common brands, Aldara or Zyclara. It is a drug that boost the immune system’s ability to fight. It is approved for venereal warts by the FDA. It is however not recommended by FDA that the drug be marketed as an indication for regular warts.
To use this drug, apply 5% cream or 3 nights per week. After application, wash off after 6 – 10 hours. Then use this drug for a period of 16 weeks. The disadvantage with this drug is the cost that you need to incur so that you finish the course. There could be reactions when you apply this drug including redness, irritation and ulcerations.
There have been cases of hyperpigmentation. During use of this drug it is recommended that you do not engage in any sex whether protected or unprotected as it is known to weaken condoms and vaginal diaphragms. It is however not approved for use in pregnancy.
Podophyllin and podofilox:
Podophyllin is a resin that is indicated for genital warts. Podofilox is just a brand name with the same drug. The drug is able to elicit antimitotic activity that leads to the destruction of warts. Its use is based on an application with a cotton swab if it is a solution of if a gel, then you can use a finger.
Apply for 3 days with a consequent 4 day break. This is done in cycles to up to 4 cycles. The total amount of this drug that can be used in a day should not exceed 0.5 mL per day.
This drug has not an established confirmation on its safety upon use by a pregnant mother and should therefore be avoided. In addition, 10%-25% should be applied to each wart and allowed to sit so that it is air-dried. At this time, you can wear your clothing.
Irritation is a potent side effect that can be avoided by ensuring that the drug dries completely over the warts and that it is done in the standard doses. There are guidelines proposed by the CDC. In addition to applying not more that the amount state previously, it should be applied on an area of less than 10 cm2 of warts per session and that the area on which it is applied should not have any open wounds.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA):
The method of action of this chemical is it burns the genital warts. Unlike podophyllin, this drug can be used for internal warts. It is indicated for warts that are small and those that are very hard. It being a caustic agent makes it a really good destroyer of warts and it does this by causing proteins to coagulate.
The good thing about this drug is that its low viscosity allows it to flow rapidly when applied and this can spread onto multiple warts especially the type that occurs on the arm. However, this can also work to your disadvantage and lead to damage of adjacent untargeted tissues.
Therefore, to avoid flowing rapidly, a small amount should be applied onto the warts. Other sources allow neutralization of the TCA with soap of sodium bicarbonate. Note that the latter compound is a baking soda.
These are bases and they will help increase the pH or reduce the acidity of TCA. This treatment should be used weekly. Unlike the other discussed drugs, TCA can be used in pregnancy. TCA however has its own side effects including a burning sensation after application for the first 10 minutes (National Health Services)
Sinecatechins:
This is a green tea extract with an active component known as catechin. It can be found over the counter. This medication is applied three times a day.
Apply a 0.5 cm strand of ointment to each wart and apply to ensure that the wart is completely covered. The duration or treatment is 16 weeks and should not be used longer than this. Wash off the ointment after use with soap and clean water.
One thing that you should remember is that this medication is not indicated for warts in the moist tissues of the genital area and therefore you should not try this. It is recommended that you halt any sexual contact while using this medication.
As any other medication, sinecatechin is associated with a number of side effects such as a rash on the skin, erythema, ulceration and edema among others. It has also been shown to weaken the condom and vaginal diaphragms like Imiquimod and therefore even protected sex is contraindicated.
Since the safety and efficacy of this drug has not been established for use in warts, it should not be used in patients with HIV and neither should it be used in pregnant mothers.
Salicylic acid (SA)
this is also an option to treating warts. In fact it is very effective. According to Kwok CS (2012) [2], study showed that this medication performed better than cryotherapy in the treatment of warts.
The good thing is that it is effective for warts on all sites and is associated with fewer side effects unlike cryotherapy which is associated with scarring, blistering and pain.
However the downside is on the duration it takes to manifest a discernible improvement taking several weeks of daily use to work. It has been shown to have a modest therapeutic effect.
Management of warts
Management of warts can be conducted in two ways. It can be patient-applied or provider-applied. In the former, the patient may want to apply the medication in privacy and would therefore need to be educated on how to use the medication.
Compliance to the medication needs to be emphasized so that the course is completed. Follow up is not necessary but after a period of 3 months, the doctor follows up to enquire on the performance of the drug to establish drug failure.
In the other method, provider applied, the method of removing warts requires specialized equipment and a professional therefore needs to be provided in the clinic or under the professional’s supervision.
In patient applied method, podophyllin 0.5% solution or gel/Imiquimod 5% cream/sinecatechins 15% ointment can be administered and the patient will be able to apply by him/herself.
In provider applied therapy, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen/podophyllin resin 10%-25% in a compound tincture of benzoin, TCA 80%-90%/ surgical removal can be instituted. Surgical removal can be done by excision, electrosurgery, curettage or tangential shave excision
Other Overnight Removal methods- Excision, Surgery, Laser etc.
Methods that could be helpful in removing warts overnight or in a short period of time are mostly surgical or close to it but doesn’t involve the use of medication such as creams. However, medication could be added for long term management of the condition. The wart will however be removed. Here are the methods that can be used to remove warts:
Excision
This is a procedure in which the wart is removed by cutting it from the skin. It is indicated for small and hard warts and mostly those warts that have merged together to form a bigger wart that resembles a cauliflower.
In this procedure, a local anaesthetic is recommended so as to numb the area. The procedure is obviously painful but the end result is really encouraging. Lidocaine and some epinephrine may be used for this purpose.
Then, a sterilized scalpel is used to cut the wart and an incision is made to remove the vasculature that supplies it. If the wart is pedunculated, then this method would ensure that the stalk is equally excised. The incision is later stitched back. The disadvantage is that this method could cause scarring and the area remains painful and sore for up to 2 weeks after the procedure. It is also not indicated for warts that are large.
Electrosurgery
This method can be performed on its own but is nowadays combined with excision to manage large warts. It mostly targets the warts that are perianal and in the anogenital tract such as the vulva.
It is also effective for warts that have not responded to topical regimen. When this procedure is being conducted, excision is used to remove the lump of the wart then an electric current passed through a loop of metal pressed against the wart.
This is repeated to pass current further through the remaining part. It is however not a preferred method of removing warts that are multiple or many as it may be quite painful.
Laser surgery
This method is particularly effective when it comes to treating large warts and those that cannot be easily accessed. Warts that are deep in the anal canal or vagina may pose a big challenge in removing them with the other methods.
It is also hard to apply anything on these areas. This method is also used to treat large genital warts. The warts are burnt using a laser. The procedure may require that an anaesthetic be used depending on the number and size of warts in question.
In fact, in this case, either a local or general anaesthetic can be used. Soreness and inflammation is not unheard of and these may persist for 2 to 3 weeks.
