What is the Difference Between Greek Yogurt and Regular Yogurt? Is Greek Yogurt Better & Healthier for You?
What is the difference between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt? Is it better and healthier for you? Greek yogurt has gained a lot of popularity over regular yogurt in American food culture. If you are wondering what the difference between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt is, you are not alone. This article explains these questions in detail to help you understand how much you stand to benefit from Greek yogurt over the regular variety.
Difference between Greek Yogurt and Regular Yogurt
While yogurt has loads of nutritional value, there is a big difference that has driven most American to stocking up entire sections of their refrigerators with Greek yogurt brands. This unmistakable difference is what some people including me are set to find out. I choose to do the work for all of us.
The procedure of making yogurt is all the same with the basic requirements being milk and probiotics. In both varieties same type of bacteria are required: Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus . These are responsible for the fermentation and the bitter tangy taste in yogurt.
Bacteria work by breaking down milk sugar (lactose) into lactic acid responsible for the acidic taste. When fermentation is done, the liquid part called the whey is strained off resulting in thicker more solid yogurt. Regular yogurt is strained twice while Greek yogurt is strained three times making it thicker in consistency with double the protein value of regular yogurt.
Cow milk differs from buffalo milk in richness and composition. Buffalo milk has lower cholesterol but more calories and fat compared with cow’s milk. Buffalo milk is consumed in south Asia, with India, China and Pakistan being the biggest producers.
Cost– walk along the dairy aisle and you will find that Greek yogurt is double the price of regular yogurt. Other than the great demand and awesome taste, in making Greek yogurt, the milk required to make the equal amount of regular yogurt is double so due to more straining of the liquid part. So, be ready to spend some good cash on this delicacy.
Cooking – Since it does not curdle like regular yogurt, Greek yogurt can be used in cooking in place of things like oil, cheese, cream, mayonnaise and butter.
Texture – Greek yogurt is way creamier and thicker than regular yogurt as it is strained more compared to regular yogurt.
Fat – Unless you’re using the nonfat varieties, Greek yogurt has about three times the saturated fat than regular yogurt.
Protein value- packed with the double the protein value, Greek yogurt is preferred in weight loss programs. 8 ounces of Greek yogurt offers 20 grams of protein while the same amount of regular yogurt has 11 grams.
Calories– plain nonfat Greek yogurt has less calorie count than regular yogurt. This however only stands with no added sugars as they can considerably increase the calories.
Calcium – Regular yogurt has about three times the calcium of Greek yogurt. Both are still considered good sources of calcium, but women who don’t get enough calcium from other foods may want to stick to regular yogurt for its bone-building benefits.
Sodium- Greek yogurt has half the sodium in regular yogurt making it a healthier option.

Is Greek Yogurt Healthier and Better for You?
Between regular and Greek yogurt which is healthier and better for you? Most people consider Greek Yogurt Healthy- why?
It common to hear that Greek yogurt is superior to others in terms of health and nutrition. Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt. This however does not mean that it is always healthy. There some which contain lots of sugar and fat.
If you want a healthier option always check the formulation details; plain low fat or plain non fat are the best. These plain options provide less sugar and more protein than regular yogurt. On the down side, regular yogurt contains more calcium responsible for strong healthy bones.
I am not sure about all the fuss on Greek yogurt’s by product (whey) being bad for the environment. Whey which has a low PH is sold to farmers to feed livestock and as farm fertilizer. There have been claims about the supply being too much than farmers can handle. Let’s hope the research being carried out on better uses of whey yields results soon enough.
Similarities between Greek Yogurt and Regular Yogurt
Now that we know all about the differences between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt, let’s find out what the similarities between these two are.
Greek yogurt and regular yogurt are both dairy products made in the same manner with same ingredients. They are both healthy foods and can be ideal for anyone.
Yogurt is very healthy and an ideal food only if you go for the right choice. Both Greek yogurt and regular yogurt have low-fat, non-fat varieties. Choose the ones with no added sugar as this lower the health benefits by adding on to the calorie count.
Most people eat yogurt as a form of snack, or a mini breakfast meal. Yogurt is a very versatile food that can be eaten on an instant, or even combined with some dishes or salads for dressings. Being rich in healthy bacteria, yogurt is considered to be one of the healthiest, not to mention tastiest, foods around.
Both types of yogurt can be used as lower-calorie substitutes for fatty ingredients. Swap out eggs and oil in baked goods for Greek yogurt, or use either yogurt type in place of full-fat sour cream, heavy cream, mayonnaise, or cream cheese in recipes. Both types can also be used in place of other high-calorie ingredients in dips, sauces, salad dressings, smoothies, and desserts.
